Language of Flowers & Symbolism: Secrecy, magic, protection, luck and healing
Ferns were considered an exceptionally odd and magical type of creature, in no small part because they didn't appear to produce either fruit or flowers as a plant should. The seeds were believed to make one invisible when gathered on Samhain eve and carrying them in your pocket would bring good luck in cards. Ferns were very much a fairy plant and it was thought that you could banish a fairy changling to a river or lake by turning them into a clump of ferns.
These bold statement earrings were made with a Fern leaf from my garden cast in Sterling silver clay which is set against two brass half-moons that I patinaed to create a whole universe of brilliant verdigris blues, greens and rust brown.
In the sixth photo you can see the back of the brass moons are a much more solid blue-green than the front, if you'd like me to switch them around so that side faces forward instead just let me know, it's no trouble.
The patina is set with 3 layers of archival renaissance wax but it's important to remove them before batching or swimming. The patina is an organic process and despite being sealed may continue to evolve slightly over time.
Each piece is then filed, patinaed, sanded and polished in my home studio before being finished with handmade 14k gold filled ear wires.
Your piece will come packaged safely in one of my beautiful signature gift boxes complete with a thank you card that explains the heritage of the piece and a care instruction card. If you'd like me to include a hand-written note on your behalf, just leave a note in the 'message to seller' box at checkout.
