Language of Flowers: Compassion, Protection, Creativity, Rebirth and Renewal
The Elder is one of the most important and sacred trees in Irish mythology. Sister to Hawthorn and Blackthorn in being a favourite of the fairies, it is said to protect from evil spirits when planted outside the home but the wrath of the faeries would fall on any dare cut one down. It was one of the most important sources of medicine before the birth of modern pharmaceuticals and was called the medicine chest of the country folk. Symbolically Mother Elder represents feminine wisdom, death (and so rebirth) as well as spiritual and physical protection.
This silver pendant was made with some Spring blossoms from an Elder tree in my garden. I first create a mold from the plant from which I create a precious metal clay cast which when fired at a very high temperature leaves a solid Sterling Silver pendant. I then file. patina and polish the pendant entirely by hand here in my home studio in West Cork, Ireland.
As these pieces are woven from soft clay they have an organic finish.
