This sweetly simple plant talisman was made with real Elder blossoms from a tree in my garden. The piece is made by first creating a soft mold of the fresh buds, which I can then use to cast in fine silver clay. Once cured I fire the clay with a jewellers torch to create a solid Sterling silver medallion. This is then filed, patinaed and polished by hand before finishing with a chain. All steps of the process are done entirely by hand here in my home studio in West Cork, Ireland.
The Elder (Trom in Irish) is one of the most important, feared and sacred trees in Irish mythology. Sister to Hawthorn and Blackthorn in being a favourite tree of the fairies it is said to protect from evil spirits when planted outside the home but the wrath of the faeries would be on whoever dares to cut one down. It was one of the most important sources of medicine before the birth of modern pharmaceuticals and was called the medicine chest of the country folk. Symbolically Mother Elder represents feminine wisdom, death (and so rebirth as both are one and the same in nature based worldviews) and both spiritual and physical protection.
As these pieces are woven from soft clay and so have a lovely organic, textured finish that comes when pieces are sculpted by hand so please don't expect perfect symmetry, they're as perfectly imperfect as nature tends to be.
