This sweetly simple plant talisman was made with a single Bluebell blossom from under the Chestnut tree at the bottom of my garden. The piece is made by first creating a soft mold of the fresh buds, which I can then use to cast in fine silver clay. Once cured I fire the clay with a jewellers torch to create a solid Sterling silver medallion. This is then filed, patinaed and polished by hand before finishing with a chain. All steps of the process are done entirely by hand here in my home studio in West Cork, Ireland.
Our precious native bluebells (Coinnle Corra in Irish) are arguably one of our most beloved and treasured wildflowers, evocative of the ethereal beauty of the once great Oak woodlands that covered almost all of Ireland. The were considered a fairy flower, and the bells would summon fairy folk if rung. They're closely associated with the moon and were said to prevent nightmares. Symbolically they are associated with beauty, grief and mourning.
As these pieces are woven from soft clay and so have a lovely organic, textured finish that comes when pieces are sculpted by hand so please don't expect perfect symmetry, they're as perfectly imperfect as nature tends to be.
